Parks at Burg Hülshoff and at Haus Rüschhaus

Haus Hülshoff is the most poetic residential castle in Munster. Do you know why?

Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, the famous Westphalian poet, took her first breath here on 12th January 1797.

Located in Havixbeck, this castle is one of the most popular places for outings. This castle has a typical Westphalian built and is surrounded by a large park categorized into multiple areas.

Haus Rüschhaus is located a few kilometers away from Haus Hülshoff. Haus Rüschhaus is an elegant farmhouse surrounded by an artificial moat. It used to be the residence of the famous Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun.

Baron Clemens August von Droste-Hülshoff acquired Haus Rüschhaus in 1825. He also owns Burg Hülshoff. Haus Rüschhaus started a new phase after he died. His daughter lived in this country house from 1826 to 1846. She was here with her sister Jenny and some servants.

More about the Haus Hülshoff and its park

The southern part of this castle has a “winter boscage”, the oldest part of its park. The boscage is primarily planted with shrubs and evergreen trees. Hence, it’s attractive for visitors. In the northern region, you will find a rectangle-shaped pond protected inside a moat.

The focal area of the garden is a bronze bust, which is placed in the middle of a round flowerbed. This flowerbed is located at the centre. Some of the broadleaf trees like hornbeam, maple, oak, ash, and beech adjoin the north’s garden and create a “summer boscage”.

There is a centre between the woods that takes you to the garden pavilion, dating back to 1804. Apart from all these, there is a game reserve and lawn at the edge of this park.

How to get there?
